We are the silenced.
We are so silenced.
We didn’t have a childhood — there was war.
We painted.
We wrote poems.
We wove dreams.
We learned how to be children
Alone.

We didn’t love our parents.
Nor ourselves.
They didn’t love us either.
A familiar tale.
Later, we had to endure other “parents” — by force.
But
I hate all forms of force.
I want to go back.
Back so far, I become an infant again.
Held in my mother’s arms, maybe.
But what for?
Even my mother
Doesn’t like my writing.

We are the children of war.
We never learned how to say what we feel.
And yet, we exist.
Only exist.
In memory of all the I am nots
My mother crossed out in my poetry notebook when I was twenty
And above them, she wrote We are.

So—
We
Are.
Maybe.
